The California Taxpayers’
Association, which has kept a close watch on tax and spending issues in the
Golden State since 1926, has issued its scorecard on key tax votes of state
legislators during 2002.
Cal-Tax President Larry McCarthy, noting that a number of
bills damaging to taxpayers passed the Legislature, said, “This scorecard is
disappointing because it shows so many legislators failed to grasp the impacts
that these bills have on the long-term health of the California economy.”
Twenty-five state senators, for example, voted in line with
Cal-Tax positions less than 32 percent of the time. Fifty of the 80 Assembly
members agreed with Cal-Tax positions less than half the time.
“The scorecard provides critically important accountability
for legislative votes on tax and public finance issues that have an enormous
impact on the health of the state’s economy and its ability to attract
investment and jobs,” McCarthy said.
