SACRAMENTO- Taxpayers Against 224, one of the largest and most diverse coalitions in California political history, declared victory in its fight against Proposition 224.
"California voters were not fooled by this self-serving jobs grab brought to them by Caltrans bureaucrats," said California Chamber of Commerce President Allan Zaremberg who led the No on 224 coalition.
"Voters proved they want real competition, not the bogus competition offered by Prop. 224," said Zaremberg. "More competition - not less - is the key to providing taxpayers with more bang for their buck."
California Taxpayers' Association President Larry McCarthy added: "Business, labor and local government joined forces in an unprecedented coalition to say no to the Caltrans bureaucrats and the larger state bureaucracy that Prop. 224 would have created.
"The public wants to limit the growth of government bureaucracy. The way to do that is to take advantage of the expertise the private sector has to offer."
The more than 800 organizations of Taxpayers Against 224 also included the California Labor Federation (AFL-CIO), California School Boards Association, California Teachers Association, California State PTA, League of California Cities, California State Association of Counties, Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California, American Institute of Architects - California Council, National Federation of Independent Business and both the Democratic and Republican parties.
