Property Tax:
Split Roll Losing Popularity With Californians, Poll Shows

Public support for a split-roll property tax system has fallen dramatically over the past year, and now registers at just 37 percent of registered voters, Field Poll Director Mark DiCamillo told the Sacramento Press Club on June 16.

Mr. DiCamillo noted that in May 2008, support for a split roll was 54 percent. But in a Field Poll released in April of this year, support dropped by 17 percentage points. "It was actually bipartisan agreement that now is not the time to be raising taxes on business," he told reporters at the Press Club event. (Cal-Tax: The April poll also found that 70 percent of registered voters support the two-thirds vote requirement for the Legislature to raise taxes.)

Mr. DiCamillo offered his comments as part of a dual presentation with fellow pollster Mark Baldassare of the Public Policy Institute of California. The "Mark and Mark Show," in which the two present polling data and offer their opinions on current events, is an annual tradition for the media group.
