Tax Commission:
Tax Commission's Full Meeting Schedule Announced

The full meeting schedule has been announced for the 12-member commission formed to recommend changes to the state's tax structure.

According to the Commission on the 21st Century Economy website, the meeting schedule is:

·         January 22 on campus at the University of California at San Diego, 9 a.m. According to the official agenda, the meeting will open at 9 a.m. with remarks from commission chairman Gerald Parsky, followed by a public comment period and then presentations from the state's legislative analyst and representatives of the California Department of Finance, the Public Policy Institute of California, the National Association of State Budget Officers and the Federation of Tax Administrators.

·         February 12 at UCLA, time to be announced.

·         March 10 at UC Berkeley, time to be announced.

·         April 9 at UC Davis, time to be announced. This is the tentative meeting that will be held "if needed." There are only five days between the time this meeting would conclude and the day the commission's report is due to the Legislature and governor, and two of those days are Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The commission is staffed by Mark Ibele, who is taking a leave from his job as tax advisor to Board of Equalization Chairwoman Dr. Judy Chu. Mr. Ibele is a former tax consultant in the Legislative Analyst's Office, and in the past has been a vocal proponent of extending the state's sales tax to services.

Like all commissions created by executive order, the commission is subject to the state's Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, which means that the commission must conduct its business in public, and the public is entitled to have access to the commission's records.
